Hiro and Shannon Kimoto started their business, Handy Hero, in 2004 in their garage. Prior to this, Hiro had been working for a nonprofit organization as a building manager where he learned to fix furniture, perform routine maintenance repairs, and upgrade old houses. Hiro decided he wanted to leave the nonprofit sector and start his own business and that’s when he and Shannon started Handy Hero.

Starting a Business

Since beginning Handy Hero in 2004, Hiro and Shannon have been very successful. Hiro oversees the technical aspects of each job that comes their way, managing a team of five handymen and one estimator. Shannon has learned all she needs to know to manage the behind the scenes administrative and marketing work efficiently. Together, they work to provide the highest level of service for all of their clients’ home improvement needs.

Building a Customer Base

Handy Hero has had many repeat customers over the years. In fact, they have completed over 68 projects for one customer alone since 2008. Hiro’s secret is to treat every home improvement project, big or small, as important as the next. By putting as much energy into smoke alarm battery replacements as he does into kitchen remodels, Hiro earns his clients’ trust and confidence.

Hiro’s favorite projects are remodels. The largest project he’s ever worked was a 3,000-square-foot basement remodel. Hiro and his team completely renovated the basement, adding everything from drywall to electrical, and even perfecting the lighting behind the bar that they custom built themselves. Handy Hero and Pro Referral

Hiro and Shannon have worked with Pro Referral for a very long time and even participated in Pro Referral’s pilot program with Home Depot in 2014. Hiro said that he’s been through all of Pro Referral’s changes and has really seen the company grow and expand, accommodating both the pro and the customer all the while. Pro Referral has been a big help in connecting Handy Hero with clients, and Hiro and Shannon say they get about 10 or more leads from Pro Referral every day.

Customer Reviews

Handy Hero has a five star rating, a Pro Referral Pro Score of 100, and over 130 reviews! Check out what Hiro and Shannon’s clients have to say.

One of Hiro and Shannon’s employees, David, did an excellent job installing this clients oven and microwave. He was able to install the oven even when originally given incorrect measurements!

“Mark came out and estimated the job.  Spent lots of time with me explaining what would be done, and answering my questions. Good price. The owner, Hiro, also spent time on the phone with me discussing the job and answering my questions. How unusual is that David came out and did the difficult (access) mechanical and electrical work of installing a fan in the attic gable, plus some add on electrical work elsewhere. He did an absolutely superb job, including clean up. They (Handy Hero) showed up when they said they would. They were very friendly, accommodating, and easy to work with. This was a very very positive experience. I will use these guys again for sure.”– Gary from Flowery Branch, GA

Another client of Handy Hero’s needed two ceiling fans installed quickly. The client purchased the fans and two days later David installed the fans and even gave the customer some helpful tips!

“Very good communication and very professional. I requested a quote last night and got a call from Hiro the next day. On the same day, I got a call from David for the schedule. David came as per the agreed date/time (basically the next day) and installed both the ceiling fans from 18-foot tall great room and 9-foot tall bedroom within a reasonable amount of time. After installations were done, David still found time to explain the functionality of the fans and some useful tips. Will definitely call again for future work. A+++” – Ricardo from Cumming, GA

Championships and Charities

When Shannon and Hiro aren’t busy running a business, they like to put work in on their own home. They have done all of the tiling work in their home, from backsplashes to floors. Not only do they enjoy home improvement, but they also enjoy swimming, running, and mountain biking. They spent the last year qualifying for the Xterra National Championship Triathlon held in Ogden, Utah.  The triathlon includes a series of intense cardiovascular feats: swimming one mile in a lake, mountain biking for over 17 miles, and finally running on a trail for over 6 miles. Throughout the entire 5 plus hours of the race, they climbed a total of 4,100 feet!

Even though their schedule is pretty jam-packed, Hiro and Shannon still make time for helping to improve the lives of others. They regularly provide for underprivileged children in Columbia, Chile, and Zambia. They give these children clothing, food, and water and even maintain a written correspondence with them from the time they are young kids until they turn 18 years old.
